Heatwave warning for Berkshire

According to the Met office, there is a high chance that temperatures over the next few days could pose significant health risks.  Problems linked with hot weather, such as dehydration and heat exhaustion, can affect anyone, although certain people are at a particularly high risk.  These include children, those with long term health conditions and our older residents (especially those living alone or in care settings).

There is plenty of common sense advice on how to reduce the risk of being affected by the heat.  This includes staying indoors or in the shade as much as possible, and of course making sure that we have plenty to drink (remembering that tea, coffee and alcohol can actually make matters worse).  Outdoors, hats and a high factor sunscreen are a must.

People in Berkshire are also being asked to look out for others.  Taking a few minutes to check up on an older person or someone who is ill, especially if they live alone, can be really important in hot weather.  Have they got enough to drink?  Do they have all their medication?  It only takes a moment and can sometimes help avoid a serious health problem developing.

There is plenty of information on how to care for ourselves and others during hot weather at the NHS Choices website: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Summerhealth/Pages/Heatwaveamberalert.aspx
